How Dog Age Really Works

The old "multiply by 7" rule is inaccurate. Dogs age much faster in their first two years. A 1-year-old dog is roughly equivalent to a 15-year-old human, and a 2-year-old dog is about 24 in human years.

After age 2, dogs age approximately 4-5 human years per calendar year, depending on their size. Smaller dogs tend to live longer and age more slowly than larger breeds.

This calculator uses the scientifically-backed formula that accounts for the rapid development in early years and the size-based aging differences.

Frequently Asked Questions

How old is my dog in human years?

Use the calculator above. The first year equals about 15 human years, the second year adds 9 more (total 24), and each year after that adds 4-5 years depending on size. A 5-year-old medium dog is roughly 36 in human years.

Why isn't it just dog age ร— 7?

The ร—7 rule is a myth. Dogs mature much faster in their first 2 years, reaching adolescence by 1 year and full adulthood by 2 years. After that, they age more slowly. The ร—7 rule would make a 1-year-old dog only 7 in human years, but they're actually sexually mature teenagers.

Do small dogs really live longer than big dogs?

Yes. Small dogs (under 20 lbs) typically live 15-20 years, medium dogs 10-15 years, and large/giant breeds only 8-12 years. Larger dogs age faster after maturity, which is why size matters in the calculation.

When is my dog considered a senior?

Small dogs: 10-12 years. Medium dogs: 8-10 years. Large dogs: 6-8 years. Senior dogs need more vet checkups, joint supplements, and adjusted exercise routines.

How can I help my dog live longer?

Maintain healthy weight (obesity shortens lifespan), provide regular exercise, annual vet checkups (twice yearly for seniors), dental care, quality diet, and mental stimulation. Preventive care is key.

What's the oldest a dog has ever lived?

The oldest verified dog was Bluey, an Australian Cattle Dog who lived 29 years and 5 months (1910-1939). Most dogs live 10-15 years, with small breeds reaching 15-20 years.

How do I calculate my puppy's age?

Puppies under 1 year age very rapidly. At 3 months, they're like a 5-year-old child. At 6 months, like a 10-year-old. At 1 year, they're equivalent to a 15-year-old teenager.

Does breed affect dog age calculation?

Size matters more than specific breed. However, some breeds have shorter lifespans due to health issues (e.g., Great Danes, Bernese Mountain Dogs) while others are exceptionally long-lived (e.g., Chihuahuas, Toy Poodles).
